Out of the Box…the Donut Box

Master creative chef, beer drinker, whiskey connoisseur, Ohio dweller, and my brother, who will be known here as WesternBacon, will be doing posts from time to time at Lilly Sue’s Bites and Brews. The meal he has crafted up today will bring you warmth to the heart and comfort to the belly, which is especially needed if you reside in CO with snow in May!

What if there was a way to combine the tastes of breakfast, dinner, and desert all in one coma inducing meal? Well now there is..

A new tradition recently started at my home – Burger Night Wednesdays!!! I have made a couple different kinds, but the Breakfast Burger is by far my most amazingness creation. Well its got the most calories at least. I don’t recommend this often, but its fun every once in awhile.

I didn’t realize I would be blogging about this so I only have the one picture, but I think its clear where this is going.

85/15 % Beef (Enough for your crowd. I usually have around 12-15 people and find that 5-6 lbs of beef is more than enough.
Eggs for frying
Tater Tots (At least go organic here for some “health”)
Cheddar Cheese
Brown Sugar (Optional)
Salt Pepper
And if you have not guessed it by now, glazed donuts…
Buns (Optional)
Defribliator is optional.

The steps for cooking this are pretty straight forward, but I like to cook things in this order:

1. Start bacon fryn
2. Preheat oven according to Tater Tot cooking instruction.
3. Make the beef patties. I almost always only season my burgers with salt and pepper, but this time I also used a very small amount of brown sugar. Its also really important to let the beef come as close to room temperature. It helps everything cook evenly.
4. Start the grill and let the coals get really hot, usually takes about 10-15 minutes. (You could also broil or pan fry) The burgers are ready to be flipped when they are no longer sticking to the grill (about 2 – 3 minutes per side).
5. Start Cooking Tater Tots according to instructions.
6. Fry the eggs.
7. Once everything is done, build your burgers and enjoy!

The hardest thing about this meal is timing. You want everything to be done as close together as possible. I like to build my burgers then warm them in the oven so the cheese melts, and everything is nice and warm.

I don’t have a good beer to go with this, but I would suggest something light, simply because this is such a heavy meal, although I could also see a good stout complementing the sweetness of everything.

  1. Haha… I just read your comment about the tater tots going in the donut hole. I was wondering where those little fellas had got to… I was scratching my head trying to figure out whether they were IN the burger or to be eaten on the side. Great idea. The donut hole is like a ‘fries holder’ in tater tot form!!

    • ha ha yep basically!! The tater tots can’t be be just a side this time! Though you might want a few extra to pop in your mouth πŸ™‚

  3. I tried the bacon cheeseburger on a glazed donut a few years ago at the NY State Fair and it was pretty amazing. But this….I think I’m actually a little scared of just how incredible this must taste.

    • ha ha oh that is awesome! Luckily, even if you try this and then crave it every night of the week it is a little bit of work so you should be fine at resisting πŸ™‚ Thanks Katie!

  4. Bon Jovi nostalgia! I remember that song from driving around Holland. I used to think it was one of the heaviest songs ever.

    • You’re welcome!! πŸ˜‰ Glad you caught it! I almost thought of calling the post shock (shot) through the heart…:Thanks Liz! πŸ˜€

      • I don’t think I could do it either–have seen similar fare at carnivals and while I’m usually up for just about anything food-wise, I’d at least want to have the donut (just 1 please! though it could be frosted of filled, that would be nice), bacon, and egg separately. Will pass on the burger and tater tots. Wowza. And I saw a beer in the background! at least the beverage choice was whole grain πŸ˜‰

      • The meal definitely isn’t for health, that is for sure!! I think I would really like the sweet salty combination…my mom said it was the bacon that really brought everything together…I guess that is why they make a bacon maple doughnut at so many places now! The tots in the doughnut hole might be my favorite part! lol

  5. Wow, I have heard of the glazed donut burger bun, one of those bad boys for breakfast and it’s smoothies the rest of the day. I love burgers and glazed donuts why not together!! Thanks for the ear and eye candy, Bon Jovi rocks!!

    • ha ha ya if it is for breakfast it would definitely have to be a weekend treat..and no other big meals in the day! Maybe some veggies?! ha ha This song was in my head this morning so I had to post! πŸ™‚

  6. ZOMG DONUTS. That was my first thought on reading the headline – capslock of doom and all. πŸ™‚

I am SO saving this recipe. A thousand blessings on your brother for coming up with this …….. I am salivating.
