The Sweet and Savory Sawtooth and Sesame

For Thanksgiving this year my sister made these delectable sesame seed cookies.


The subtle but definite flavor of the cookie was hard to describe except that they were so scrumptious! I would typically think sesame cookies would be savory but the addition of red wine and cinnamon gave them a little bit of a sweet taste πŸ˜€


My mom sent me away with some of the leftover cookies and I enjoyed them with the Sawtooth Ale by Left Hand Brewing (Longmont, Colorado).


The sweet and savory of the cookie was delicious followed by the Sawtooth Ale. The malts in the ale brought out the sweetness of the cookies and then the light hops provided this pleasantly refreshing combination.


I would like to give you a more technical description of how the flavors complimented each other but honestly I only realized how enjoyable the combination was once the cookies disappeared and my beer was almost gone πŸ˜›


The Sawtooth Ale by Left Hand is a great ale that they refer to as “both complex and balanced,” which can’t be described better. It also recently won another award in the Great American Beer Festival.

  1. i’ve only had a sesame cookie maybe once.. or twice in my entire life! I do remember loving it though – surprisingly sweet, in a subtle way. So simple, yet so delicious. I love these Lilly Sue! YUM!

  3. I think I know those cookies (and LOVE them) — aren’t they the biscotti regina from that pretty little book “Biscotti: Recipes from the Kitchen of The American Academy in Rome”? Your photos are wonderful, and I can see how these would taste great with the right brew.

  4. Would your sister share her cookie recipe? They look amazing. I could see eating them for breakfast:-) (Though the accompanying brew–or glass of red wine?–would have to wait until AFTER I take my kids to school–haha) Also, did you see I posted Hell’s Kitchen peanut butter recipe? You had mentioned visiting when you were in Mpls, yes?
