Since the Irish seem to make better whiskey than beer I do not have an “Irish” beer to post about but in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day I will at least write about a beer with a green label 🙂 The Maibock by Fort Collins Brewery (FCB) comes in the large 650 ml bottles. It is a Bock beer, which is a German style beer (sorry Irish!). A Bock beer is a heavy-bodied and bitter-sweet lager. More specifically, the Maibock has a lot of hops but with a sweet aroma making it a very smooth beer. It does not taste like a typical hoppy beer and even those who don’t enjoy hops would probably enjoy the Maibock. The Maibock is a spinoff of the original Bock beer. The original Bock beer typically has fewer hops and is light gold in color whereas the Maibock contains a more prominent hop aroma and is a light amber. The Maibock is a beer that is brewed in the Fall, aged in the Winter, and then enjoyed in the Spring. Zum Leben! …meaning “To Live.” 🙂
Have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Be safe and don’t drink too much green beer 😉 Also if you are interested in learning more about different styles of beer, and specifically German styles, keep checking back! I will be dedicating a week to different styles of German beers.
